C-4 PITTSRl RGI I POST-G AZF.TTF. SATURDAY. JULY 22. 2000 OBITUARIES EICCIHT S. CHLEY VAESE OSI1AGAH Sewickley dentist, avid outdoorsman Leading Armenian poet in exile in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and "were constant companions ever since." A hundred years after that voyage, in 1918, Dr.

Galey's father, Roger D. Galey, established a dental practice in Sewickley. Dr. Galey died Thursday as a result of Alzheimer's disease at ManorCare nursing home in Ross. He was 76.

He was born and raised in Sewickley. He graduated from Sewickley High School in 1941 and from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1945, where he was president of Psi Omega dental fraternity. He joined his father's practice in the Pittsburgh National Bank Building on Beaver Street. During the Korean war, he served as a captain in the Air Force Dental Corps in Levittown, N.Y., from 1950 to 1952. Father and son worked together until the elder's retirement around 1976.

Dr. Galey worked another 19 years, retiring in 1995. His son, R. Kent Galey of Fox Chapel, continued the family tradition by specializing as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. of Dr.

Galey actually shooting a bird on his annual turkey hunts. "I don't know if that's a reflection of his skills or the fact that the turkeys got out of the area whenever he went out. I wouldn't broach the subject with him." Dr. Galey remained active as an outdoorsman until about two years ago, when Alzheimer's disease diminished his capacity. He is survived by his wife, Betty Thorpe Galey, a sister, Nancy Galey of Atlanta; a son, R.

Kent Galey of Fox Chapel; a daughter, Karen Galey Smith of Sewickley; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Presbyterian Church of Sewickley, 414 Grant St Burial will be private. Copeland Funeral Home, Sewickley, is handling arrangements. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Little Sewickley Creek Fishing Project, care of M.

Tomana, 218 Edgeworth Lane, Sewickley 15143, or to Sewickley Public Library, 500 Thorn Sewickley 15143. By Bill Heltzel Post-Gazette Staff Writer Robert S. Galey, a popular Sewickley dentist and avid fly fisherman who initiated many into the sport, died Thursday. Dr. Galey joined his father in a dental practice that spanned 77 years.

In his leisure time, he organized fishing trips, hunted, played golf, danced and generally enjoyed the company of other people. The object of his outdoor life was not necessarily to catch fish or bag game, friends and family said, but to enjoy the camaraderie. "He was a man's man," said best friend Bill Home of Bradford Woods. Dr. Galey was a descendant of Denny and Peggy Galey, neighbors of Thomas Mellon's parents in Ireland.

The future founder of Mellon Bank wrote in his 1885 autobiography that the Galevs' son was "my playfellow on the snip" in 1818 when the 5-year-old Mellon journeyed to America. Twenty-five years later they were reunited in Western Nichanian said. "He had a hard time imposing himself as poet." Mr. Oshagan was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, grew up in Cyprus and Jerusalem, and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he received a doctorate in comparative literature in 1951. He taught in Lebanon for the next quarter-century while writing, but came to Philadelphia with the advent of civil war in Lebanon in 1951.

From 1976 to 1982, he taught Armenian language, history and culture at the University of Pennsylvania. His 1980 poem "Ahazank" includes several street scenes and landmarks of Philadelphia. In the stark "Alert," Oshagan wrote: "Each passing minute is my first and last I must grab the last human And wrench some utterance from his mouth." By The Associated Press Vahe Oshagan, critically acclaimed Armenian-language poet, has died of complications from heart surgery. He was 78. Mr.

Oshagan died June 30 in Philadelphia. He was famed in Armenian intellectual circles for his eight volumes of poetry, six volumes of fiction, and many short stories, plays and commentaries. Most of his works were written in Armenian and some have been translated into English. Mr. Oshagan is credited with having revolutionized Armenian poetry by rejecting its imposed formality.

He was also hailed for giving a voice to the Armenian diaspora. Mr. Oshagan was "the most important poet of this generation," said Marc Nichanian, a professor of Armenian studies at Columbia University. "For a long time his work was not even accepted as poetry," Dr. Galey was so popular, Home said, that getting an appointment was difficult.

"You almost had to stand in line." Knowledge and enthusiasm for the outdoor life was part of Dr. Galey's charm. He organized fishing trips, at first to trout streams in the Allegheny National Forest and in West Virginia, and later to Alaska, Idaho and Montana. He taught the intricacies of fly fishing to a tight-knit group of fathers and sons. "I was always interested in fishing," said Dr.

Jon Hottenstein of Sewickley. "But he's the one who showed me the fun and joy of it." Dr. Galey released the fish he caught. "The journey is to catch the fish, not kill the fish," said his son. "The joy is getting there and having some fun.

Many times, he would not catch anything." Dr. Galey also stocked Little Sewickley Creek, kept its banks clean and taught children how to fish in the popular tributary of the Ohio. Home joked that he never knew Guard for a few years after realizing "he was flunking out of school," said his brother, David. Mr. Hanson was a brilliant student, but also had the heart of a party animal.

The high spirit prevailed through his adulthood, his brother said. Mr. Hanson, who was with Westinghouse for 30 years, earned his master's in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966 and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. As an analytical engineer at Westinghouse, he reflected a generation of science and engineering. In addition to the artificial heart, he worked on development of atomic rocket engines, deep space radiators, solar cells, and other alternative energy projects.

The moves throughout childhood were a function of his parents' divorce and his father's career, originally as an engineer and later as an explorer, writer and lecturer. His longest stay anywhere in childhood was in Delaware, where he went to high school and joined the Sea Scouts, a boys organization for sailing hobbyists. Upon graduation, Mr. Hanson went to Haverford College, a Pennsylvania school rooted in Quaker teachings that influenced him throughout his life.

He interrupted his education there to join the Coast By The Associated Press Bemie Whitebear, a longtime advocate for Indian recognition who led a foundation working on behalf of Seattle-area tribes, died Sunday in Seattle after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 62. Mr. Whitebear first gained notoriety when he helped lead the "invasion" of Fort Lawton in northwest Seattle in 1970. He and others pushed through the gates at the Fort Lawton property and declared they were reclaiming it after plans were announced to list the fort as surplus and turn it over to Seattle for a city park.

The occupation lasted for three months and drew national media attention and a visit from ac tressactivist Jane Fonda. Congress eventually ordered the city to negotiate with the Indians, and Mr. Whitebear's group, the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation, was offered a 99-year lease on a 20-acre parcel of the land. Today, the Daybreak Star Art Center stands in the city's Discovery Park. Mr.

Whitebear worked until his death to try to expand the center to include a museum, performing arts center and "potlatch house" to accommodate up to 1,500 people for the traditional feast. His foundation has grown to 110 employees and a budget of $5 million and offers 13 educational, counseling and other programs to an estimated 4,500 people each year. By Pamela Gaynor Post-Gazette Staff Writer John Parker Hanson never lived more than four years in a single place when he was growing up. But he had little trouble putting down deep roots in White Oak once he signed on as a Westinghouse Electric Corp. engineer and began his own family there.

"He was happy to have his kids bom and brought up in the same house," Mr. Hanson's wife, Julia, said. Mr. Hanson, whose engineering career encompassed work on exotic technologies such as an atomic-powered artificial heart, died Monday at Forbes Hospice following a massive stroke. He was 66.
